Relay for Life - the Aftermath

I can't thank everyone enough!

We still have a few outstanding pledges; but before this is all over, we'll turn in over $1200.00 for the American Cancer Society. All of this in two weeks and basically by word of mouth.

The five mile loop around the Fairgrounds turned out to be a perfect venue for this ride with a minimal amount of traffic. I don't have any official count but I suspect we had at least 24 riders out there at some point and I know of at least 5 that finished a century.

I can only hope that this can become a recurring event. Imagine if we had 10 clubs of 20 riders at the fairgrounds raising that kind of money. Cyclist could help make a difference. Beside, how often do you get a chance to ride a century at night? Think of it as a self-supported century ride where you're never more than 3 miles from a rest stop.

Relay for Life

Central Georgia Cyclist will have a team in this years "Relay for Life" (May 19/20th). We have permission to ride our bikes as part of this event around the Fairgrounds (Larry Walker Parkway, South Perry Parkway, Hayes Rd - a 5 mile loop). All I ask is for everyone on the team to try and raise a minimum of $50. Write a check, ask your friends and family, have a car wash/bake sale/yard sale. I don't care how you raise the donation; it's all going to a good cause.

Their website – Relay For Life

Everyone is welcome on the team: road bikes, mountain bikes, comfort bikes, recumbents or tandems. You don't have to be a member of CGC; you just have to want to be there. We are on public roads so you must follow the Georgia Law for riding on the street (front/rear lights at night). And because it is open road, you must assume all the risks, the Relay for Life folks can't protect you outside the fairground property. You'll have 24 hours of riding, of camping with friends, socializing. If you do 20 laps, you're in the 100 mile club, can you do 200 miles? 300 miles? All you roadies out there, here's your chance to enjoy the 24 hour experience the mountain bikers rave about (riding into a beautiful sunrise is something everyone should experience).

Now, I'm going to throw down the challenge - I need a group of "super domestiques" to work with me - I plan to do this solo, so anybody willing to sit on the front and pull for me would be appreciated. You wanted an epic ride, here's your chance; can we as group ride 1,000 miles? 5,000 miles? 10,000 miles? It's up to you.

Here's our chance to do something positive as a club. Anyone can find an excuse to stay home; what I'm looking for is those special people that read this and think "yeah, I can do that"....

RAFB Air Show

The local cycling clubs got together to sponsor a booth at the RAFB Air Show. It was one of those ideas that everyone thought, "well, why not?". So, with just a few emails back and forth and a little "cheerleading", prodding and begging. We managed to get representatives from CGC, OMBA, MAX, BCM to man the booth. Our focus was on creating exposure for cycling in Middle Georgia with information about the various clubs, the "share the road" license plates, bike trails and group rides.

There were crowds of folks walking around the displays; unfortunately, most of the Air Show visitors wanted to see jets and had no interest in bicycles (or fitness). But we did attract a few folks that did not know cycling clubs existed in Middle Georgia and they seemed genuinely interested in what we were trying to do.

Was it worth it? I think so. We've spent the last year targeting the folks that already know we're here. We need to get beyond them. We need to reach out to the riders that don't know us as well as attract people that are interested in cycling as an active lifestyle.

There's been a 20% increase in traffic on the website this week, so I think it helped
